Scale and ownership
The Mid-West covers an area of 111,000 ha. The area contains some of the highest mountains in the UK. In the west and north west there are the high, steep sided massifs of the Mamores and the Nevis Range. Gentler hills are found in the south west, which run out onto the flat, boggy expanse of Rannoch Moor. To the east there is a further area of high mountainous ground comprising the summits of Ben Alder, Aonach Beag, and Beinn a Chlachair, with rolling foothills stretching north-east towards Strath Spey.
